Where Swat is

The Swat Valley runs along the Swat River in Malakand Division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Mingora is its main city, next to Saidu Sharif. In October 2025 the district was split into Upper Swat and Swat districts.

Getting there

The Swat Motorway links the M-1 at Nowshera to Chakdara, at the mouth of the valley. It opened to traffic on 3 June 2019 and cut the Nowshera to Chakdara drive from about three hours to one.

Kalam and Mahodand Lake

Kalam lies 99 km north of Mingora at about 2,000 metres, where the Gabral and Ushu rivers meet to form the Swat River. Mahodand Lake is about 40 km from Kalam in the Ushu side valley, and Kundol Lake about 19 km away in the Utror area.

Malam Jabba

Malam Jabba, in the Hindu Kush about 40 km from Saidu Sharif and 314 km from Islamabad, is one of Pakistan's two ski resorts (the other is Naltar). Its top station is at about 2,804 metres, the ski slope runs over 800 metres, and a new 800-metre chairlift opened in September 2016.

Buddhist heritage

Swat was part of ancient Gandhara. Butkara Stupa near Mingora is generally dated to the 2nd century BCE.
