Where Hunza is
The Hunza River runs through the valley, which lies along the Karakoram Highway north of the city of Gilgit. The valley floor sits at about 2,438 metres. It widens around Karimabad, the old state capital once called Baltit, where most hotels and tours are based.
What to see
Baltit Fort, on the hill above Karimabad, was the residence of the Mirs of Hunza and is around 800 years old. Altit Fort sits lower down the valley.
Attabad Lake formed after a landslide on 4 January 2010 blocked the Hunza River and a stretch of the Karakoram Highway. Further north are Passu and, on the border with China, the Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 metres, the highest paved international border crossing in the world.
Getting there
Tours drive up the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad, usually with a night on the way, since the road through the mountains is long and slow. Some travellers fly to Gilgit and continue by road. Check the itinerary of each package for its route and how many days are spent travelling.
