When to go
The tourist season runs from April to October, when daytime highs reach around 27 °C. Winters are cold: in December and January temperatures can fall below −10 °C, and outside the main season snow can cut the area off for long periods.
Getting there
Skardu has an airport with flights from Islamabad; it was re-opened as an international airport in December 2021. Flights over the mountains depend on the weather, so tours that fly usually plan a spare day.
By road, the route from Islamabad follows the Karakoram Highway and then the road to Skardu from near Jaglot. It is a long drive, which is why most road tours spend their first and last days travelling.
What to see
Shangrila Lake (Lower Kachura) is known for its resort, and Upper Kachura Lake nearby is quieter. Tours from Skardu also go to the Deosai plains, the town of Shigar and the cold desert near Skardu, which is covered in snow in winter.
