Best time to visit Hunza and Skardu

The tourist season in Gilgit-Baltistan runs from April to October. Which month suits you depends on what you want to see: Deosai and the high passes open only in summer, while spring and autumn are cooler and quieter. Here is the year month by month, with the northern areas tours listed on Wonderlist now.

Spring: April and May

The season opens in April. In Skardu the average April day reaches about 19 °C and nights fall to around 7 °C. Gilgit, the city below Hunza on the Karakoram Highway, averages about 24 °C by day in April.

The Khunjerab Pass road at the top of Hunza usually reopens to cars in April and to heavy vehicles in May, once the snow is cleared. The exact dates change every year.

Summer: June to September

Summer is the only time every road is open. The Deosai Plains, a high plateau about 30 km from Skardu at an average of 4,114 m, can only be reached in summer: its Balti name means "summer's place". The Babusar Pass between Naran and Chilas is open from April to September.

The valleys are warm by day: Skardu averages about 32 °C in July and Gilgit about 36 °C, with cool nights. The mountains block the monsoon, so there is little summer rain in Skardu.

Autumn: October

October is the last month of the main season. Skardu averages about 20 °C by day and 4 °C at night, and Gilgit about 26 °C. Deosai and the Babusar Pass are closed by then, so autumn tours stay in the valleys.

Winter: November to March

Winter is cold and roads can close. In Skardu the average January day stays around 3 °C and nights fall to about −8 °C, with lows below −10 °C in December and January. Snow can cut the area off for long periods.

The Khunjerab Pass is usually closed to heavy vehicles from 30 November to 1 May and to all traffic from 30 December to 1 April. Few agencies run tours in these months; check the dates on each package.
